HYPHN - BENJAMIN EWING

BENJAMIN EWING

multi-disciplinary artist living & working in Portland, OR

I’ve found my own identity through this work and had the gift of being able to go through that process. If that inspires others to wrestle with themselves in the same way, to me, that is what makes it beautiful to be an artist.

Art is an opportunity to share some sort of intimacy with someone without having to know them. To have a lens into your life, your thoughts, and your process. With that, hopefully it will spark some sort of initiative in them.

On Architecture

There has always been an interest. It feels like the ultimate medium for me. With photography and painting, it’s a bit more straight forward. Whereas with architecture, it’s more experimental. I have a lot of respect for Frank Lloyd Wright for the way he approached space. It’s been a natural progression starting in photography and trying to understand how light functions and how a subject relates to space. Then take it one step further and say, “now I want full control of everything”, over the space, light and how people feel. To be able to reverse engineer experiences is what I want to be doing.

With one the pieces I’m currently working on, the client asked me to focus on a certain feeling for each one. For example there’s one on aloofness and another about motherhood. It’s a dream scenario for me, for someone to say “theres a feeling I want you to communicate”. I don’t think we give enough people credit, I think people can pick up on those emotions. The motherhood piece was interesting, trying to tap into memories of my own mother and portraying it on canvas. A very intimate headspace to get into.
